A Meditation MP3 That Works – I feel more relaxed, happier and I’ve stopped freaking out so much

For years I’ve been listening to guided meditations. Sometimes I’ll listen to a couple every week and other times I’ll go months without. On the 30th of January I purchased Glenn Harrolds “528Hz Solfeggio Meditation CD & MP3 Download – Transform Your Life, Repair DNA and Create Miracles” and as suggested have been listening to it every day.

I’m now on my 12th day as Glenn suggests you do it every day for 21 days. I’m not one to do anything consistently so I’m very surprised that I’ve kept this up. The guided meditation is easy-going, relaxing and quite peaceful. With some mediations I feel that I have to pay attention and get tired…with this one I actually look forward to it as it truly provides a daily mini holiday.

During some sessions my brain is too active and I think of ideas or stuff happening on the day. Other days I fall asleep. And sometimes the mediation seems to go very well – I fall into a deep relaxation, listen to almost everything Glenn says and really sync myself into the experience. I’ve learned that with meditation you can’t have any expectations – it is what it is.

Anyway – I was attracted to this meditation because it uses ‘sound therapy’. In other words, the sounds within the music are supposed to cause an effect on your mind/body – not just the guided mediation.

The CD/MP3 uses sounds according to the ancient solfeggio music scale. Apparently, each note within the scale has healing properties. The one used within this particular one resonates to the frequency of 528hz. By listening to sound at this frequency you’re supposed to be able to heal broken DNA and experience healing on all levels – emotions, spiritual, mental and physical. Furthermore, listening is supposed to bring you relief from anxiety, fatigue, control issues and helps to get rid of negative thinking. Heck – that can’t be bad! Additionally, the mediation can help you create miracles. Yes please!

To get more information on this particular CD and the solfeggio scale, read more here: http://www.hypnosisaudio.com/cds-downloads-528-solfeggio-meditation.htm

(Also – I’m almost positive that this MP3 can be found at the App store and it costs much less than the MP3/CD)

In addition to doing my 528hz meditation every day I also have been using an App I found on my Ipad2 App Store – Brainwave. This very inexpensive app has 25 binaural programs. You can listen to rain and thunder, ocean waves, a flowing creek and many other natural sounds. In the background tones are being played at different hz in each ear. When listening to the pre-set tones it causes the brain to go into different states. The app has frequencies to induce deep sleep, have a power nap, reduce stress, get a motivation boost, think critically, concentrate and many more.

It’s freaky stuff, but I totally notice a difference. I don’t think it’s a placebo effect either. I did the deep sleep binaural program last night and my husband said I was unconscious. He had to turn the TV up because I was snoring…I don’t snore! Moreover – I can’t sleep with the TV on!!!

This sound stuff is interesting. Often I don’t believe in things but give them a go anyway. Well – I’ve been pleasantly surprised with this stuff. So – if you’re looking to enjoy your journey through life more, give these things a go and see what you think.

Woooooo wooo wo. Big smiles, KIM

How to use affirmations to make yourself feel happier, lighter and more fulfilled with life

Affirmations are an interesting topic in the world of self-help. It seems that authors/speakers either love them or hate them.

This is my take on them – if they work for you, use them. If they don’t work for you, don’t use them.

That being said, whenever I say an affirmation that rings true to me, I find myself either smiling or feeling lighter. If you’re a fan of Louise Hay (self-help guru) you’ll know more than enough about affirmations – if you’ve never come across her before and think that affirmations might work for you, check out her book, “You can heal your life” as it offers many affirmations for a wide variety of issues.

Previous to these past couple weeks I use affirmations flippantly. When I felt the need to cheer myself up, I might say, ‘Life loves me,’ or ‘Life flows easily for me’ or ‘Kim – you’re awesome!’

However my belief in affirmations has changed drastically. Right before Christmas I woke up with a bladder infection. My back felt like it was being twisted and pulled to pieces and my plumbing process was quite painful.

Having these infections in the past I knew that I probably needed yet another dose of antibiotics – something I desperately try to avoid now days. Knowing that my doctor’s office would be closed over the holidays I decided to look up my issue in Louise’s bestselling book. This is what the book said:

PROBLEM: Bladder Problems

PROBABLE CAUSE: Anxiety. Holding on to old ideas. Fear of letting go. Being pissed off.

NEW THOUGHT PATTERN: I comfortably and easily release the old and welcome the new in my life. I am safe.

So…The probable cause freaked me out as it’s totally true.  I immediately started reciting the ‘new thought pattern’ or affirmation every time I reflected on my painful situation. Within a day I felt relief but thought I was nuts. I’ve never had an infection leave that quickly nor have I had one leave without antibiotics.  I kept saying the affirmation every time I felt yucky. Before I knew it, the infection was gone. Even now I’m still saying it as it’s become a habit and I feel good once I recite the sentence!

I never really believed that affirmations could heal me – I always thought of them as ways to make yourself feel better. Well, now I’m convinced. Needless to say, I’ve typed out several affirmations and have put them around the house.

Yes – my friends and family will think I’m nuts when they go to the bathroom and see a piece of paper that says, “I easily release all that my body no longer needs” and “Intake, assimilations and elimination are all in the right order.”

Or by my closet, “I love my closet,” or “I trust my inner wisdom to pick the perfect out for me.” (I have serious issues when getting dressed – I look at all my clothes and think – ahhhhhh, what should I wear?!?!?)

So yes…friends will think I’m nuts when they see my little affirmations around the house, but so what! I’m now convinced that if I let my mind just do what it wants to do I’ll be thinking crap thoughts, such as ‘Oh Kim, you’re out of your depth.’ With these little reminders I can at least input some good stuff. And like my article the other day, it’s important to know if you’re putting ‘in’ what you want to get ‘out’ of your life?

Anyway, if you want to find Louise’s book, ‘You can heal your life’ here’s a write up from the Hay House site below and a link to Amazon.

“This New York Times Bestseller has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. Louise’s key message in this powerful work is: “If we are willing to do the mental work, almost anything can be healed.” Louise explains how limiting beliefs and ideas are often the cause of illness, and how you can change your thinking…and improve the quality of your life!”

Also – I just finished her new book, ‘You can have an exceptional life’ that was written in conjunction with Cheryl Richardson. It’s a light read and made me smile throughout. It gives you and really good idea on how Louise Hay manages to be as happy and as healthy as she is at the amazing age of 83. She’s definitely someone I wouldn’t mind emulating!

A quick stress relief exercise that works fast!

With Christmas getting closer and closer I can feel my stress levels increase. Even though I’m not even hosting the big day at my house I still get nervous about various bits and bobs. Will my daughter like her new presents? Will my stuffing come out okay? Will  bad weather cause  issues during our drive down to the South coast? Will I wake up and have yet another pimple appear on my already dull face?

Yikes…I’m spiralling down into the dark abyss.  Let’s put an end to that!

  1. Decide how bad the stress is that you feel – low, medium or high
  2. Place your palms together
  3. Feel the stress that you want to leave your body (feel the physical pain or emotional surges)
  4. Breath in and out through your mouth pushing your stomach out as far as you can (on the inhale) and do this as fast and as deep as you can
  5. While breathing focus on something positive while noticing your heart area (for example, feel the love you felt at the birth of your child)
  6. After 10 to 30 seconds stop and see how much your stress levels have reduced.  Continue to do the exercise until you feel relief.

I’ve been doing this off and on now for a few days and it’s definitely helping me to snap out of my stressful mind-set. Give it a go and let me know if it works for you.

Stress is not bad – it’s your management of it that causes the problem

Enjoying the journey is a day to day, and sometimes hour by hour, balancing act

I’ve discovered that it’s important to be conscious about how you feel and to remind yourself to pay attention to your mind (thoughts/feelings) and body (aches/pains).

Far too often I find myself sitting at the computer for too long.  I keep thinking, ‘I’ll just get this done’ or ‘If I carry on I’ll have more time to relax later.’ But all the while, my posture begins to slump, my shoulders start to ache, my breathing gets shallow and by the time I take a break it’s too late.  Damage has been done.  It’s as if I start out most days like a beautiful flower in full bloom but at the end of the day I look as if I haven’t had water or sun and I’m drooping over ready to drop.

I certainly don’t start and end the day in full bloom!  Gosh – what would life be like if I did?

Anyway, I’m not sure how you handle stress but for the most part I can deal with the normal day to day stuff. Throughout the day I get more and more stressed but by the time the day is ending I am able to relax and recover until the next day. It’s not perfect, but it works.

What throws my stress management out the window is when something large is looming – for example, a trip home to see the family, a house move, an on-going lawsuit, and upcoming public presentation (yikes) or anything that’s not a normal every day occurrence.

My theory is that I probably operate at the threshold of ‘okay’ stress management on a day to day basis which is not ideal. Perhaps if I was better at seriously managing my day to day stress levels then I could cope better when something larger looms?

When something larger is looming my body tells me…my shoulders feel as if strings are attached to them, fed through a central location on my spine and then pulled up through my head.  They ache so much that I try to force them down, but it feels as if the muscles have locked into ‘shrugged shoulder mode’.  It’s horrible.

Then I get this feeling that I’m not really in touch with reality. I feel displaced and tell people I’m ‘out of it.’

Now I’m sure you know that chronic stress has been found to be linked with the emergence of type 2 diabetes and increased chances to develop heart disease. Personally, I think that too much bad stress is the number one cause of every ailment – if you’re not operating optimally your body will eventually tell you…and if you don’t listen, your body will scream louder and louder.

How can we focus our energy on ways on how to reduce our stress levels?

Well – this is what I do and it works for me:

  1. Listen to a guided meditation CD.  If you’ve never done meditation before, give it a go.  Guided meditations work really well for loads of people.  The way it works is that you listen to someone who talks you through the relaxation of your body, helping you to visualise nice scenes and to breath deaper.  There are loads of free guided meditation MP3’s on the internet.  Have a search on google and try one out.  If you want my recommendations, let me know and I can send you a list of the one’s I use.  You can also search for Hypnosis downloads – they’re the same thing.
  2. Do some form of Yoga postures!  If you have Sky (or cable/digital TV) there is surely a channel that offers Yoga sessions.  Most gyms offer sessions now and failing that you can get a book or DVD. (Read my Yoga DVD recommendation article)
  3. Breathing exercises.  The way you breath makes a MASSIVE difference to your energy levels.  If you want to feel as if you’re on top of the world, give Kundalini Yoga a go – it’s all about breathing.  It’s not about postures, but about different ways to breath and increase your energy levels.  After I first experienced it I thought I was going to be able to produce super human powers!  (I also write about Kundalini Yoga in my Yoga DVD article)
  4. Journaling.  Getting your thoughts and feelings on paper will clear a bit of space in your mind. By spending a few minutes to outline how you feel it can often help you to relax and realise that things don’t really have to be as stressful as you’re perceiving them.  (Read my journaling article).
  5. Left/Right Yellow Pad Exercise.  This exercise is magical.  By brainstorming everything that worries you or that you hate or anything that is upsetting you, you then write down the opposite…by doing this exercise you sit down feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders yet you get up feeling light and airy ready to take on the world.  (Full instructions here.)

Aside from those things, if you can exercise that’s a fantastic stress buster.  Even if it’s just to go for a walk it helps your body to get rid of some of that pent up anxiety.  I personally have the best intentions in the world when it comes to exercise but I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m never ever going to routinely work out.  It’s just not part of who I am…

The important thing about managing your stress is for you to understand what’s available to help you out and then use it when you need it.

Don’t let others tell you that you must eat right, drink 10 glasses of water, run a marathon or meditate for 1 hour. My suggestions above are what work for me – surely what works for you will be different.

The key thing is to know how stress affects you and to know when you need to recover and repair yourself.  Ideally it would be great if we could find a way to effectively manage stress at all times, but I’m not sure that’s possible.

Anyway – if you have any suggestions as to what helps you to manage your stress levels, please leave a comment below.  I’m always looking for more tools to add to my armoury!

Big love. x

Feel more relaxed and better manage your emotions through quick mediations

A Way to Benefit from Meditation without Spending Loads of Time!

Right – I always thought you needed to set aside a good 20 minutes to 1 hour to get the benefits of meditation. And when having a spare 20 minutes, rather than meditate, I often feel forced to clean the kitchen or nip out to get groceries. Well…after listening to an audio by Laura Silva on ‘Stoplight Meditation’ I discovered that there’s a way to do quick meditations throughout the day.  In fact, her audio teaches you how to do a meditation at a stoplight with your eyes open.

I thought, ‘yeah right,’ but after following her instructions I was able to do it (get into the Alpha state needed for meditation) and I did feel a quick surge of peacefulness for doing so.

Aside from prompting you to focus on your goals, the benefits of these mini meditations include:

  • Having a clear mind
  • Feeling more relaxed and in control
  • Managing your emotions better
  • Thinking through problems easier

Laura Silva offers what she calls a ‘passive moment meditation’ where she talks you through it and then she gets you do to it by yourself… After learning the meditation technique Laura then walks you through a series of exercises all leading to a quick open-eyed meditation technique.

Open-eye meditation

With eyes open, you can defocus your vision and then picture goals, outcomes and benefits.  Laura calls this dynamic energetic manifestation.

  1. Select a goal you would love to manifest
  2. Close your eyes
  3. Picture it on your mental screen
  4. Muscle up intense desire, belief and expectancy
  5. Open your eyes but keep your vision defocused and remember how this feels
  6. Blink, focus and out of the meditation you come

Laura starts you off with a 2 minute meditation as outlined above with your eyes closed (at first) and gets you to do it a few times reducing the amount of time it takes each time.  By the end you do it with your eyes open for ten seconds.  I went along with her instructions and each time it became easier and easier to do.

The audio is about 15 minutes long and well worth the time invested.  Now when I’m going to clean the kitchen or nip out for groceries I can surely spare 10 seconds in-between to do my ‘Stoplight Meditation’!

Journaling – a way to influence your self-talk for the better

When we’re having a bad day (or bad week/month) it can often be difficult to ‘snap out of it’. In addition to feeling bad we then beat ourselves up for not being able to fix ourselves.

We often try to think ourselves out of a bad mood but controlling our incessant thoughts proves to be impossible.  We set off to feel gratitude or think of positive past memories – only to realise an hour later, that instead of lighting our mood we’ve been envisioning a future argument we want to win, or replaying a situation that makes our blood boil.

Once we realise that we’ve spent a whole hour ruminating we then think, ‘stupid me – why did I allow that to happen?  What’s wrong with me?’ We then feel even worse.

When you find yourself in a place where your thoughts are spiralling out of control, putting pen to paper can allow you to gain some control.  If nothing else, it could slow down your thoughts enough to manage them.

Journaling also helps if you’re in a loop! Have you ever thought about something over and over and can’t seem to make the thought stop?  You even say, ‘I know…I know…’ but the thought, visualisation, re-run of a situation keeps happening over and over. I get loops in my dreams and it drives me nuts!

Streaming your thoughts onto paper can free your mind so that it doesn’t have to keep functioning like a broken record.  Furthermore, getting your thoughts out can help you to gain a deeper perspective on things.  And it’s entirely possible to write in a way that helps you to influence your self-talk for the better.

When life gets overwhelming for me, I take out my WHSmith A4 Wide Ruled Notebook (black) and let out everything I’m thinking.  I don’t worry about grammar or spelling.  I don’t write it in a way that it has to make sense.  I just pour everything in my head out onto the pad.

When my brain stops, I then write ‘What else?’ and wait for it to off-load even more anger, emotion and pent-up anxiety.  After everything is on paper my writing mysteriously tends to change.  More often than not, I find myself writing that ‘things will be fine,’ or ‘this situation will pass and I’ll be stronger for it.’ It’s as if there is version of me that is much older, wiser and loving…and this version reaches out in my writing to connect and lift my mood.

Sure – it sounds a bit nuts, but give it a go and see what happens when you empty your head onto a piece of paper!

And please remember – if you’d like to receive my daily articles, leave your name and email address in the box on the top right of the page.  Every time I write an article, you’ll get it.

Reduce your stress levels with my favourite Yoga DVD recommendations

After writing the article, “Yoga can definitely help reduce the madness levels in your life” I had many readers email me for my recommendations.  I thought you might want to see them too, so I’ve put my thoughts (and links to Amazon) below.  I have over 30 Yoga DVD’s and most of them I’m not happy with.  Some are too hard, others are too fast and some are filmed in a way that you can’t see what you’re supposed to be doing!  Anyway – these are my favourites:

Yoga and You, Leah Bracknell

My favourite DVD seems to no longer be selling, however you can buy one used from Amazon.  The price seems a bit steep so I would suggest you look on eBay. The reason I like this CD is it has various sections – you can pick and choose or do all of them.  When I have enough energy I do the full DVD, more times than not, I skip a section or two.

Each section is easy going – you don’t have to do many sequences.  This DVD is more about stretching and relaxing into the poses rather than doing fast sequences.

After I’m finished I always feel less stressed and very peaceful.  This DVD is not for exercise maniacs – it’s really for people like me that never exercise and don’t want to break into a massive sweat!

Yoga for Life, Leah Bracknell

My newest favourite is Yoga for Life.  The DVD is broken into a warm-up that gets your blood flowing (but it isn’t difficult) and then moves to an energising section, peaceful section, breathing section and a relaxation session.

I usually do the DVD from the start, but choose either the energising or peaceful section but not both.  This DVD has many more sequences and you don’t hold or stretch for too long.  It’s nice and flowing and anyone can do it.  The great thing about Yoga is that you only stretch as much as you feel comfortable to do.  It’s not a contest…it’s all about feeling good.

Kundalini Yoga – to Detox and De-stress, by May Fiennes

Okay…this was a totally different kind of Yoga for me.  At first I thought it was some kind of Sex Yoga, but it’s not…although I think it could help improve your sex life if that’s something you’re looking for!

Anyway…it’s not so much about the poses and stretches – it’s more about breathing while moving/stretching.  I purchased two DVD’s from Amazon for Kundalini Yoga – the one mentioned above and another by Ana Brett and Ravi Singh.  The one by Ana and Ravi was way tooooooo much for me.  You had to do this breath and motion thing that was impossible – I had to give up and felt like a failure.  Many people seem to really like Brett and Singh based on Amazon reviews, but I’m not one of them.  It was just too hard for me.

Anyway, the May Fiennes one is really good.  It’s not difficult although there might be times where you can’t do it all.  This DVD is easy going and the end result is AMAZING.  I’m not kidding when I say that you will feel like a new person once you finish it.

An example of an exercise is this – you sit cross legged, and start off clock-wise circling your body around inhaling when you go around the front of your body and exhaling when you circle around the back.  You do this slow and then you speed up – doing it both clockwise and counter-clockwise.

Another example is putting your fingers together in front of your heart and then flicking your hands and arms out to your sides exhaling strongly (and doing this for a few minutes).  This is the most difficult exercise for me on the DVD, but I always make it to the end and feel good for it!

What I’m trying to demonstrate is that this kind of Yoga is not difficult, but the results are great.  After finishing I always feel lighter, happier, more peaceful and I get an overall sense of calmness.

I’d love to tell you to buy the DVD and I’ll refund you the money if you don’t like it, but I won’t.  You’re a big person…you can decide whether it’s for you or not! (hehehehe)

Geri Halliwell – Body Yoga

I’m not a massive fan of the Spice Girls or  Ginger Spice, but I must say that this Yoga DVD isn’t too bad!  It’s quite a bit of work and you will sweat during this DVD, but it’s in sections so you can do as little or as much as you want.  I totally don’t recommend Geri’s other Yoga DVD – Geri Yoga…don’t get that one.  It’s just not very comprehensive.

Yoga – Learn Yoga

Right – the reason I purchased this one was because it had so many 5 star ratings on Amazon.  The DVD is good from the perspective of teaching different poses; however it looks like it was recorded in 1980.  Overall, I recommend this DVD but it’s not my number 1 favourite.  Also – don’t do as I did and mistakenly choose the advanced section first!  They had me doing a head stand – not only did I almost break my neck, but I felt like a moron.  Luckily it dawned on me that I must have accidentally hit advanced rather than basic!

If you have any recommendations, please leave a comment!  I’m sure others will appreciate your thoughts as much as I will.

Yoga can definitely help reduce the madness levels in your life

Yoga can be used as a feel-good tool to help you to make sense of madness…

My cousin (in her teens) in California wrote on Facebook, “I wish there was something to organize all the random thoughts in my brain, so then I could make sense of all this madness.”  I wrote back to her saying, “Give Yoga a go. It seems to clear all sorts of normal madness”

If you want to have a clear head, feel balanced and/or reduce your stress level I seriously suggest yoga – even if you’re a guy!  Aside from helping you to improve your strength and overall fitness levels, yoga has the ability to help your head make sense of confusion.

I’m not a regular yoga person -  I actually use it as a tool when my life starts to get too stressful.  My shoulders start to tense and I feel as if the back of my neck (at the base) is being pulled up by a meat hook.  It’s not nice and once I ended up in the hospital because the oxygen stopped flowing to my brain.  Stress is not something to ignore – in fact, I’m convinced the majority of health issues stem from stress related issue.

Anyway – every time I feel the stress coming on, I do two different kinds of yoga (on separate days).  I do the one where it’s easy-going, there’s a few sequences but it’s mainly holding postures.  You don’t get out of breath and you only stretch as much as you can handle it.  When I do the postures I feel as if I’m breathing air into the various areas of my body…and I feel as if my circulation starts to improve.  It really is amazing.

The other kind of yoga I do is the Kundalini one – this is full of movements in tune with using your breath.  For example you put your hands on your shoulders spin left (inhaling) and spin right (exhailing).  This is done quite quickly.  This kind of yoga really feels like a detox to your body.  I warn you though..some of the exercises are really quite difficult.

I never go to classes but I have a few DVD’s and they’re excellent.  I can do them any time and no one has to see how inflexible my tall lanky body is!  (hehehe).

If you’d like to know my top 5 yoga DVD’s send me an email and I’ll give you my list.

Feel peaceful, relaxed and happy in 30 seconds – Easy feel-good exercise

I don’t believe in quick fixes but this little feel-good exercise had a profound physical and mental effect on me.

Take two minutes, try it out and if it doesn’t work all you’ve lost is a small bit of time.  If, however, it does work you might have a new tool to add to your box that will help you to enjoy your journey more.

Instant feel-good exercise – use to reduce/eliminate stress, clear your mind, un-shrug your shoulders or to simply feel good:

1. Close your eyes

2. Pay attention to your thoughts for a few seconds

3. Consciously say to yourself, ‘what will my next thought be?’ or ‘Where will my next thought come from?’

Give this a go for a minute before reading on.

Once you ask your mind a question about your next thought there will be a small gap where there is no thought…where there is nothing.  It might be a millisecond or it could be 3-4 seconds.  I doesn’t matter how long it is.

After the gap, thoughts will start to come in again.  Once you realise that you are thinking, pay attention to the thoughts and once again ask ‘what will my next thought be?’

This exercise will cause you to have gaps in your thoughts.  By creating gaps in your thoughts it gives yourself a break from the incessant ruminations, thoughts, ideas, fears and worries.  That little break causes your body and mind to relax into the most amazingly peaceful place.

The cool thing is that you can do this for 30 seconds and feel the effects… You don’t have to sit in a corner of the room for an hour trying not to think.

Give this a go and let me know what you think!
